This week is Harmony Week, a week where everyone is encouraged to support our country’s cultural diversity. It is a time to celebrate Australia’s multiculturalism and the successful integration of migrants into our community. The message of Harmony Week is ‘Everyone Belongs’ and as one of the most successful multicultural countries in the world, we should celebrate our multiculturalism and work hard to maintain it.
Interestingly, at Mimosa 20% of our student body has a language background other than English in their homes. 27 different languages other than English are spoken in the homes where our students reside with 54 different nationalities represented across the school!
In all classrooms there are opportunities throughout the year to celebrate and learn more about the different cultures of our families but this week highlights this important understanding and knowledge.
To help celebrate Harmony Week classes are undertaking activities in the classroom and a whole-school artwork is being produced. On Thursday, students have the opportunity to wear a national dress or costume that represents their family’s background or alternatively wear the colour orange which is the symbolic colour of this celebration.
